Ellerup briefly addressed her ongoing battle with cancer stating, “I’m not in remission yet. I have up to three years then the doctors will see if I’m in remission.” She filed for divorce shortly after Rex Heuermann’s arrest ending their 27-year marriage. The family now featured in a new documentary is focusing on rebuilding their lives amidst the turmoil. Macedonio reiterated their sympathy for all the victims clarifying that Ellerup and her children were not involved in any alleged crimes. They plan to stay in their home until the criminal case concludes which is expected to be at least a year away. “It’s a matter of piecing their lives back together and how they are going to move on,” Macedonio said. “Nobody wants to believe their family member, their dad, their brother, their husband would be capable of these kinds of crimes.”
