Georgia: A 14-year-old boy opened fire on September 4, 2024, at Apalachee High School near Winder, Georgia, killing 2 teachers along with 2 students, as well as injuring 9 others. This is the 23rd incident in 2024 in which a mass shooting took place in a school.
Where did the shooting take place?
- Apalachee High School near Winder, Georgia. It’s just an hour away from Atlanta, the largest city and capital of the state.
- Apalachee High School enrolls approximately 1900 students and is one of three high schools in the Barrow County School System.
- Opened in 2000, the school is the second high school in Barrow County. Located in a rural area of the county, Apalachee serves the local community with dedication.
What happened in Georgia and when?
- The shooting occurred at Apalachee High School.
- The 16-year-old school student said she was sitting next to the suspected attacker before the shooting.
- The suspected attacker left algebra class at 9:45 a.m. When the class was about to end he came back to the class. The girl tried to open the door, but did not open the door after seeing the gun. The girl said that the suspected attacker went to the adjacent classroom and started shooting.
- Police received a report of shots fired at the school around 10:20 p.m.
- After the incident, all the schools in the district were closed and police duty was imposed there.

According to reports and Officials, 2 students, 2 teachers, and 9 others injured. The 4 Victims were identified as:
- Christian Angulo, a 14-year-old student
- Mason Schermerhorn, a 14-year-old student
- Christina Irimie, a 53-year-old maths teacher
- Richard Aspinwall, a 39-year-old math teacher and assistant football coach
All nine of those injured- 8 students and one teacher.

Who is Colt Gray, the suspected shooter?
- Police have identified the suspected shooter as Colt Gray, 14 years old. The suspect will be charged and tried as an adult.
- Gray was carrying an AR-style semiautomatic rifle, similar to the AR-15. This type of weapon has been linked to some of the most tragic mass shootings in U.S. history.
- In May 2023, Gray was questioned by local authorities after the FBI received multiple anonymous tips regarding online threats of a potential school shooting at an unknown time and place.
Student Lyela Sayarath described Gray as “pretty quiet.” She said: “he never really talked. I couldn’t tell you what his voice sounded like, or really even describe his face to you. He was just there.”
