Tragic Campground Shooting: 37-Year-Old Man Killed by Estranged Wife and Her Mother

In a tragic turn of events at a Canyon County campground 35-year-old Melissa Calumpit and her 59-year-old mother Rosalie Morris were arrested for the alleged murder of Melissa’s estranged husband 37-year-old Travis Haywood Calumpit, according to the published article of TRUE CRIME NEWS. The incident occurred on July 12 when deputies responded to reports of an unconscious and unresponsive male near the Snake and Boise rivers. Upon arrival they discovered Travis Calumpit dead with the sheriff’s office soon launching a homicide investigation. Six days later authorities detained Melissa and Rosalie charging Melissa with murder and destruction of evidence and Rosalie with aiding and abetting first-degree murder and destruction of evidence.

The circumstances leading up to the crime reveal a complex and troubled relationship. According to court records, Travis Calumpit had informed his father he was meeting Melissa at the Martin Landing campground in hopes of rekindling their relationship. However, the meeting was part of a premeditated plan discussed during a “family meeting” on July 11 where Rosalie Morris allegedly proposed to “get rid of Travis for good.” On the day of the murder Melissa lured Travis to a secluded area of the campground while Rosalie hid nearby. Various statements by Melissa to detectives were inconsistent but they ultimately painted a picture of a fatal confrontation where she shot Travis in the chest later claiming self-defense.
