North Dakota residents have been granted an extended window to apply for the Homestead Property Tax Credit program. Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus announced the new deadline, now set for March 31, 2024, providing eligible homeowners more time to take advantage of potential tax relief.
The Homestead Property Tax Credit program offers a reduction in property taxes based on the homeowner’s income. Recent legislative changes have broadened the eligibility criteria, allowing more individuals to qualify and increasing the maximum credit amount.
Under the program’s requirements, applicants must be either 65 years of age or older or demonstrate permanent and total disability. They must also own and occupy the property listed on the application and have an income below $70,000.
Commissioner Kroshus emphasized the program’s aim to alleviate the property tax burden for seniors and disabled individuals, many of whom rely on fixed incomes. The extension of the application deadline aims to make the process more accessible and user-friendly.
During the past legislative session, the maximum income level for eligibility was raised from $42,000 to $70,000, and the maximum reduction of the homeowner’s taxable value was increased from $5,625 to $9,000. These adjustments aim to ensure that more residents can benefit from the program and receive a higher credit amount.
