Hundreds of employees in the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building located in San Francisco were advised to work from home in an early August message from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) due to rising safety and crime concerns.

Several regional sources state that the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building in San Francisco has recommended its staff to remain at home out of an abundance of precaution.

KRON 4 and the San Francisco Chronicle said that earlier this month, the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, which houses organizations including the US Department of Labor, and the US Department of Health and Human Services, reportedly sent out an announcement to its staff alerting them about increased violence in the area.

In view of the circumstances at the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, it is advised that staff make the most of telework in the coming days, according to the memo. All employees in Region IX, even those who are not currently utilizing telework flexibility, should be given this proposal.

According to local sources, the area outside the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building is a favorite hangout for drug sellers, with users frequently collapsing on concrete benches there and endangering those who work there. The city’s fentanyl epidemic is largely believed to have its origins in nearby areas.

The Nancy Pelosi Federal Building is located in Downtown San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood, which is particularly well-known for its drug trade and was previously known as the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building.

The situation in SoMa has been so poor that the neighborhood is recognized as the starting point of the “doom loop” of business closures and exodus from the city. On Monday, experts told The Boston Globe that this was probably the main reason why the HHS opted to have hundreds of federal employees work from home.

Other Nancy Pelosi Federal Building tenants, meanwhile, stated that they will continue to occupy their spaces. Five people who work for the former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s office claimed in a statement that they would continue to work on-site and not remotely.

Speaker Emerita Pelosi has consistently prioritized the security of employees, both inside the workplace and on their commutes. To combat the acute crises of fentanyl trafficking and associated violence in some parts of the city, federal, state, and local law enforcement are working hard in conjunction with public health officials and partners, the agency said.

The decision of whether or not they would continue to have staff come into the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building or if they would also transition to remote work is still up in the air for the other tenants as of Monday. How long the situation persists this way near the Federal Building and whether things manage to get worse will undoubtedly be factors that influence many people’s decisions.

According to Axios, the decision was made as the Biden administration started putting its office-time-increasing policies into action.
