Affected Areas and Precautionary Measures

The boil water order affects customers in Baldwin, Island Park, Oceanside, Roosevelt, and South Hempstead. Due to the loss of water pressure caused by the break, Liberty New York Water advises all impacted customers to boil their tap water before use. This precaution is necessary to ensure the water is safe for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, preparing food and baby formula, and giving to pets.

To properly boil water, customers should bring the water to a rolling boil, maintain the boil for one minute, and then let it cool before using. The boil water order will remain in effect for a few days until testing confirms that no bacteria is present in the water supply. For more information, customers can contact Liberty New York Water at 877-426-6999.

Widespread Impact on Nassau County

The water main break left approximately 30,000 customers without water for over an hour. On Winona Road, residents were concerned about potential flooding. Sharon Fox, a Baldwin resident, described the severity of the situation: “The water was running so deep, that when I went across to get the car, it almost knocked me down.”

Mount Sinai’s South Nassau Hospital was among the affected institutions. The break impacted water pressure at their main campus and some ambulatory locations, but hospital officials assured that “all patients are safe and there was no impact to patient care during this time.”

Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Assurances

Liberty New York Water is closely monitoring the situation and conducting thorough testing to ensure the water is safe for consumption. The company is working diligently to restore normal operations and lift the boil water order as soon as possible. Customers are encouraged to stay informed and follow all recommended safety guidelines until the order is lifted.
