Call for Bipartisan Support Asylum-Seeker
According to Arizona’s Family, Arizona cities are getting ready for a big problem. Governor Katie Hobbs is working with different groups to handle releasing migrants onto the streets without anywhere to go. She’s asking federal committees for money to help Customs and Border Protection’s Shelter and Services Program which supports nonprofits helping asylum-seekers. Hobbs also wants bipartisan immigration security laws to provide more help for these vulnerable people.

In Pima County, they’ve been using federal money to house and move asylum-seekers out of the state working with Casa Alitas a program run by the Catholic Church. But this money is running low and might be gone by the end of April. This leaves uncertainty about what will happen to asylum-seekers. In Phoenix, the International Rescue Committee is vital for housing migrants who are released showing how serious the problem is and how we need lasting solutions. As the backlog of asylum cases keeps growing and court dates get delayed for years things are getting worse for asylum-seekers. Bishop Edward Weisenberger’s request for donations shows how urgently we need support from the community to keep helping these people. With all these challenges local and federal governments need to work together to ensure asylum-seekers are treated well and with dignity. We need laws that are fair and kind to immigrants.
