WOWT in Omaha, Nebraska On Friday morning, a 37-year-old woman was killed, and a 39-year-old man was taken into custody.
Just before 5:30 a.m., Omaha police officers responded to a report of “shots fired.” When they got to the scene, they discovered a woman in an apartment close to 72nd and Jones streets, dead from gunshot wounds. She was later identified as Omaha resident Rebecka Lightner.
On Friday morning, officers reported to First Alert 6 that they had located the suspect—later identified as Omaha resident Brandon Brewer—in the area.
According to Omaha Police, after the man shot at a police vehicle, officers pursued him on foot until they arrived at the intersection of 72nd and Farnam streets.
Officers retaliated against the suspect, according to the OPD, but they denied hitting him. A Friday night update stated that they later verified that to be accurate.
According to the OPD release, “Mr. Brewer was not hit by gunfire but instead turned himself in and was taken into custody.”
As police searched the route between the crime scene and the location where the suspect was arrested for any potential evidence, the area was closed off, which affected traffic during the morning commute.
According to the release, Brewer was arrested and taken to Douglas County Corrections on charges of attempted murder of a police officer, criminal homicide, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and use of a weapon to conduct a felony.
