Dr. Robert Salata, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on February 14, 1952, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Joseph and Margaret Salata (nee Yanek), Bob’s life was a testament to unwavering dedication, compassion, and commitment to both his family and his profession. He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
A Life of Family, Love, and Dedication
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Jody (nee Hummer), and their four sons, Chris, Mike, Andrew, and Matt, along with their respective spouses, Christy, Kristen, Meagan, and Hayley. He was a cherished grandfather to eleven grandchildren—Grace, Lucy, Danny, TJ, Luke, Nick, Tommy, Ben, Henry, Leo, and Ryan—each of whom brought immense joy to his life. Known for his unwavering support, Bob was always present at his grandchildren’s performances, achievements, and athletic contests, embodying the role of their biggest fan.
Bob also played a significant role in the lives of his siblings, Carol and Gary Bertnick, Joe and Martha Salata, Jeanne Plakosh, Rick and Bonnie Salata, Diana and Dean Colaianni, and Judy Babnich. He was a beloved brother-in-law to Barb and Jack Smilanic, Tom and Riana Hummer, Dr. Gregory Hummer, Jim and Kim Hummer, Paul Hummer, Margaret Bigach, Susie Hummer, and Molly McBride. His 32 nephews and nieces will forever remember him as a caring uncle who embodied kindness, love, and dedication. His impact on his family was profound, and his memory will continue to inspire them.
A Distinguished Medical Career
Bob’s professional achievements were as remarkable as his ones. A graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, the University of Notre Dame, and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, he dedicated 40 years of his life to University Hospitals of Cleveland. As an internationally recognized expert in Infectious Diseases and Global Health, he ultimately served as the Chair of Medicine. His contributions to the field were vast, including the development of UH’s Travel Medicine Program and a significant partnership with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Mulago Hospital in Uganda, Africa.
Affectionately known as “Dr. Bob,” he was deeply passionate about medical education and research, leaving a lasting imprint on countless medical students, residents, fellows, and colleagues. His profound impact extended beyond his professional achievements, as he was a mentor, colleague, coach, and friend to many in the medical community. Bob’s warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Lasting Legacy and Memorial Tributes
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Church of the Gesu in University Heights, Ohio, on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. His interment will be private. Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Dr. Robert and Mary Jo Salata Endowment for Excellence at the Eck Institute for Global Health at the University of Notre Dame, or the Gesu School Endowment in University Heights.
Bob’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of love, strength, and commitment will continue to inspire and uplift those who carry his memory and mission forward. Though he is no longer with us, his impact on his family, his profession, and the countless lives he touched will never be forgotten.
