Keeping The County Fed: Sources Available To Meet Local Needs

ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. — St. Mary’s and surrounding counties have always been generous, especially this time of year. The following information was gathered by Sara Martin of the Department of Social Services.

During this season, it’s often hard to notice when someone is struggling to feed or clothe their families. These struggles aren’t always expressed verbally, but many food pantries and financial assistance programs are available to help.

The Department of Social Services offices in Lexington Park and Leonardtown can provide financial assistance to those in need. Call 240-895-7000 to set up an appointment.

The St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, located at 25033 Point Lookout Road in Great Mills, is open Monday through Saturday. Volunteers serve breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 301-863-5700 for more information.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, located on Route 235 (Three Notch Road), has a food pantry open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The pantry is also open on the second Tuesday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m.

Lifestyles of Maryland is another helpful resource. Its food pantry is open Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lifestyles can be reached at 240-237-8236.

Lexington Park Baptist Church on Shangri-La Drive provides assistance to families once a month on Wednesdays from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Call 301-862-2552 for more information.

The Church of the Ascension, located on Great Mills Road, has long been a support to St. Mary’s County. Its food pantry is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Call 301-737-2870 for details.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Mechanicsville has a food pantry open on the first and third Fridays of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. For more information, call 301-884-4132.

The Department of Aging and Human Services provides a range of services for seniors in the county. Call 301-475-4200 for assistance.

St. Cecilia’s Church offers help to families south of Lexington Park. For assistance, call 301-862-9400.

Meals can be delivered to homebound seniors aged 60 and older. Call 301-475-4200, ext. 1060.

Southern Maryland Tri-County Community Action offers utility assistance through the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). Call 301-274-4474 for help.

ACTS, located at 21808 Coltons Point Road in Avenue, provides medical supplies for loan. Visit their website at acts-smc.org.

The Care Net Pregnancy Center, located on Route 235 just south of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, offers free pregnancy testing, counseling, and material assistance for children. Call 301-737-4606 for more information.
