Columbia guy who pistol-whipped a man following a church league basketball game is now in police custody

Now in custody and facing a new accusation is a Columbia man who was wanted for violence following a church league basketball game.

Last November, 44-year-old Marquise Mathis was charged with two charges of unauthorized use of a weapon, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and second-degree assault. An arrest warrant was issued for him.

The first incident took place at Columbia’s Forum Boulevard Christian Church on November 2. According to the victim, Mathis got agitated and left the church while he was playing basketball inside.

Mathis was waiting for the victim when he exited the church. According to the victim, Mathis drew a revolver, racked it, came up to him, and struck him in the side of the head.

The gun went off at that moment, hitting a nearby car. Then Mathis walked away.

On Thursday, a Boone County Sheriff’s officer was positioned near the intersection of West Georgetown Drive and Pickford Place, just west of Columbia, keeping an eye out for stop sign infractions.

Using his second name rather than his first, the driver of a car that the officer pulled over and asked to identify himself stated he was Dajuan Mathis.

He said he was from Nevada, too. However, no one with that name possessed a valid license in either Missouri or Nevada, according to a scan of their systems.

The deputy was informed by a Columbia police officer that he thought the man might be Marquise Mathis after a database search confirmed his identity. Mathis told the deputy that he lied because he was wanted on felony charges, according to court documents.

Mathis was initially accused in November with hindering government operations, but he has since been charged with lying about his identity.

At the moment, he is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail.
