SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or someone looking to try something new, there’s an event for everyone this week. From engaging fossil hunts and archaeology walks in Calvert County to family-friendly workshops and roller skating in St. Mary’s, the region is buzzing with activities to keep your calendar full. Here’s a roundup of some must-visit events to kick off your year across Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties.

CALVERT COUNTY

First Fossil Friday on January 3 (1 pm to 4 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Fossil hunters, bring your fossil finds from Calvert Cliffs or other local areas from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. to be identified! This service is provided for free; however, admission fees apply for access to CMM exhibits.

History and Archaeology Walk ‘n’ Talk: Life Along the Patuxent on January 4 (11 am), located at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, 10515 Mackall Road, Saint Leonard, MD – For the past 9,000 years, people from different backgrounds have called JPPM home in one form or another. From the Native Americans to the English settlers, people have sculpted the land along the picturesque Patuxent River to fit their needs. Come take a leisurely hour and a half walk along the beautiful river shore, as we explore a recreated Native American village and move along to a 17th century tobacco plantation. Walks begin at the Pavilion Parking Lot this month at 11 a.m. No registration required. This free program is generously supported by the Friends of JPPM.

History and Archaeology Walk ‘n’ Talk: Dig Into the Story on January 4 (1 pm), located at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, 10515 Mackall Road, Saint Leonard, MD –  How are we able to interpret the history of the different people that have called JPPM home for the past 9,000 years? The Park is home to numerous sites ranging from Native American, Colonial, to tenant farmers and others. Join in an hour and a half strolling conversation on how we know what we know from the past and how we are able to tell their stories. Walks begin at the Pavilion Parking Lot this month at 1 p.m. No registration required. This free program is generously supported by the Friends of JPPM.

Pop-in with Poppie on January 4 (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Make your Saturday afternoon memorable by coming to visit with our very own Pop Star “Poppie,” our Virginia Opossum. You can join the Poppie paparazzi in the museum lobby with one of our educational interpreters, learn all kinds of fun possum facts, and visit our Museum Store for possum fan gear. Since the welfare of our animals is our primary concern, Poppie’s ability to visit with her adoring public may occasionally be subject to change on short notice.

Beer Spiking (Bierstacheln) on January 4 (2 pm to 7 pm), located at Mully’s Brewery, 141 Schooner Lane, Ste 15, Prince Frederick, MD – It’s like a toasted marshmallow for your beer! Bierstacheln or Beer Spiking has been around for over 400 years. We’re bringing it to the taproom to make your winter a little bit warmer! There will be a warm fire and a hot beer spike that we’ll stick into any beer you’d like, bringing a toasted, caramelized flavor to your favorite Mully’s brew as residual sugars are heated. You’ll be left with a tasty, slightly warmed brew that’s perfect for enjoying in the deep cold of winter. Come experience this ancient tradition with us!

Winter Lecture Series: The Military Railway Service and the Second World War by Vince Turner on January 5 (1 pm to 2 pm), located at North Beach Town Hall, 8916 Chesapeake Ave, North Beach, MD – The Military Railway Service and the Second World War by Vince Turner.  Join the Bayside History Museum as we go back to a time when most troops and supplies were moved by rail. Lectures are sponsored by the Bayside History Museum, John Hanson Chapter NSDAR, and the Calvert Library.

Beyond the Displays: Artifact Stories on January 5 (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Discover the history behind the emblem from a paddle wheel boat, the tools found in the blacksmith shop, and the Gov. R. M. McLane name board. Hear captivating stories about WWII’s impact on the Solomons community and uncover hidden pictures within the museum murals. It’s a unique opportunity to delve into local history and see these artifacts in a new light. Included with museum admission.

New Year, New Sip: A Non-Alcoholic Wine Discovery on January 8 (4 pm to 7 pm), located at Barrel 9, 11783 HG Trueman Rd, Lusby, MD – You loved her last time, so we brought her back! Join us for a special tasting event with Certified Specialist of Wine, Kaitlin! This time, she’s taking us on a journey through the world of non-alcoholic wines, featuring two different varieties and some tasty mocktails. Don’t miss out!

Solo/Couples Trivia on January 8 (6 pm to 7:30 pm), located at Mully’s Brewery, 141 Schooner Lane, Ste 15, Prince Frederick, MD – Just because you don’t have a team doesn’t mean you should be left out! Whether you can’t get a team together or just want to prove yourself, join us for trivia dedicated to individuals & couples! With a maximum team size of 2, you’ll be relying on your own smarts for general trivia questions! Bring your friends and see who among you can score the highest! Winners pick a category for next month, as well as everyone’s favorite prize: free beer! 

Sea Squirts: Wacky Weather on January 9 (10:15 am and 11:15 am), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Children 18 months to 3 years, with an adult, are invited to discover the museum together through music, stories, and special activities. Join us for story time and a craft, available while supplies last. Sessions are 25-40 minutes. Cost is free with museum admission. Sign up at the Admissions Desk when you arrive.

Teen/Tween Game Night (SO) on January 9 (6 pm to 7:30 pm), located at Calvert Library Southern Branch, 13920 HG Trueman Rd, Solomons, MD – Get together with friends for a game night! Board games, card games, all the games! Pizza & snacks! No registration. Free event. For ages 12-18. Activities, community, fun! Drop in with your friends to Calvert Library Southern Branch for for board games and pizza!

CHARLES COUNTY

Pizza Hotline Spirit Night on January 7 (2 pm to 9 pm), located at Pizza Hotline, 203 Charles St, La Plata, MD – Join the Walter J. Mitchell PTO for a Spirit Night at Pizza Hotline La Plata! WJM PTO will receive 10% of proceeds from all delivery and carryout orders. ALL orders count, so tell your friends and family to order too!

Mini Sign Workshops on January 4 (1 pm to 3 pm), located at Board & Brush, 41665 Fenwick Street, Unit 15, Leonardtown, MD – Need a family friendly weekend event? Join us for a mini-sign workshop! These designs are the perfect smaller size for updating your seasonal decor or adding something hand-made to any room. There are DOZENS of designs available that you’ll be proud to display in your home or give as a gift. These workshops are also super manageable for little hands (ages 6 and up). Sunday Yoga Series in January on January 5 (12 pm to 1 pm), located at SPICE Studio, 22725 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD – Mindful Slow Flow Inquiry-based learning means learning how to learn from our own experiences. Exploring our bodies using non-judgemental self-awareness can cultivate a compassionate relationship with the Self. We’ll practice moving from inside/out, observe alignments and inefficient habits, and notice patterns of protection. $40 for all four classes or use a class pass to drop in.
