This Foodie Road Trip Takes You To The Iconic Coney Islands of Michigan

Grab your stretchy pants and a sense of adventure, folks!

We’re about to embark on a mouthwatering journey through the Great Lakes State’s most beloved culinary tradition: the Coney Island hot dog!

1. American Coney Island (Detroit)

Let’s kick off our tour with a true Motor City legend.

American Coney Island stands proudly on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard, its red, white, and blue exterior as patriotic as the day is long.

This place has been slinging dogs since 1917, making it older than sliced bread (literally).

Step inside, and you’re transported to a world where calories don’t count and chili flows like water.

The aroma of grilled hot dogs and secret-recipe chili sauce hits you like a delicious punch to the nose.

It’s enough to make you forget about that New Year’s resolution you made… three months ago.

The star of the show here is, of course, the Coney Dog.

It’s a beautiful mess of a beef hot dog nestled in a steamed bun, smothered in chili, topped with diced onions, and finished with a zigzag of yellow mustard.

It’s like a Jackson Pollock painting, but edible and infinitely more satisfying.

2. Lafayette Coney Island (Detroit)

Right next door to American, we find its arch-nemesis and sibling rival, Lafayette Coney Island.

The rivalry between these two is fiercer than a Lions-Packers game and just as entertaining.

Lafayette’s interior is no-frills, with a counter that’s seen more elbows than a boxing match.

But who needs fancy decor when you’ve got hot dogs this good?

Their Coney sauce is a bit spicier than American’s, giving it an extra kick that’ll wake up your taste buds faster than a double espresso.

The best part?

You can conduct your own taste test by hopping between the two.

It’s like a culinary version of speed dating, except both parties are hot… dogs.

3. Virginia Coney Island (Jackson)

Next stop: Jackson, the birthplace of the Republican Party and, more importantly, home to Virginia Coney Island.

This place is as unassuming as they come, tucked away in a brick building that’s seen more history than a high school textbook.

Who needs frills when you've got thrills? Virginia's no-nonsense exterior hides a world of coney magic within.Who needs frills when you've got thrills? Virginia's no-nonsense exterior hides a world of coney magic within.

But don’t let the modest exterior fool you.

Inside, they’re serving up Coney Dogs that could make a vegetarian question their life choices.

The chili here is a closely guarded secret, rumored to be the result of a deal with a flavor wizard (or just really good recipe development, but where’s the fun in that?).

4. Starlite Coney Island (Flint)

Cruising into Flint, we find Starlite Coney Island, a retro diner that looks like it was plucked straight out of a 1950s movie set.

With its neon sign and chrome accents, it’s shinier than a freshly waxed Chevy.

Starlite’s Coney Dogs come with a twist – Flint-style.

This means a drier chili topping that’s more like a spiced meat sauce.

It’s the rebel of the Coney world, marching to the beat of its own delicious drum.

5. One Stop Coney Shop (Grand Rapids)

In Grand Rapids, the One Stop Coney Shop is, well, your one stop for all things Coney.

This place is cozier than your grandma’s living room, but with better food (sorry, Nana).

Their Coney Dogs are a perfect balance of snap, spice, and everything nice.

It’s the kind of meal that makes you want to hug the chef, if only your arms weren’t so busy shoveling food into your mouth.

6. G&L Chili Dogs (Muskegon)

G&L in Muskegon is proof that good things come in small packages.

This tiny drive-in looks like it could fit in your pocket, but it serves up Coney Dogs big enough to satisfy a lumberjack after a long day of… lumberjacking?

Don't let the modest exterior fool you. G&L's tiny building houses giant flavors that'll knock your socks (and maybe your shoes) off.Don't let the modest exterior fool you. G&L's tiny building houses giant flavors that'll knock your socks (and maybe your shoes) off.

The chili here is the stuff of legends, with a recipe that’s been passed down through generations like a sacred text.

Yes, there’s a place called Kalamazoo, and yes, they have fantastic Coney Dogs.

Coney Island Kalamazoo is like the Switzerland of the Coney world – neutral in the Detroit rivalry, but still packing a flavorful punch.

It's not just a coney joint, it's a time machine. Step into Kalamazoo's past and future, all in one tasty bite. It's not just a coney joint, it's a time machine. Step into Kalamazoo's past and future, all in one tasty bite.

Their dogs are a perfect blend of East and West Michigan styles, creating a harmony that’s more impressive than a barbershop quartet.

It’s the kind of place where you can solve all the world’s problems over a plate of Coneys… or at least forget about them for a while.

8. Olympic Coney Island (Livonia)

Olympic Coney Island in Livonia is going for the gold when it comes to Coney Dogs.

This family-owned joint has been serving up championship-worthy dogs for decades.

By day, it's a coney paradise. By night, it's... still a coney paradise. Olympic's 24/7 glow is a beacon for the hungry.By day, it's a coney paradise. By night, it's... still a coney paradise. Olympic's 24/7 glow is a beacon for the hungry.

Their Coney sauce is a marathon of flavors that’ll have your taste buds doing victory laps.

And if you’re feeling particularly Olympian, try their “Coney Challenge” – it’s like a decathlon for your stomach.

9. Leo’s Coney Island (Royal Oak)

Leo’s in Royal Oak is the overachiever of the Coney world.

Not content with just hot dogs, they’ve expanded their menu to include everything from Greek salads to breakfast skillets.

But don’t worry, their Coney game is still stronger than a pot of diner coffee.

Their dogs are a perfect balance of traditional and modern, much like Royal Oak itself.

It’s the kind of place where hipsters and old-timers can bond over their mutual love of chili-covered meat tubes.

10. Coney Island Lunch (Saginaw)

Saginaw’s Coney Island Lunch is the kind of place that time forgot, in the best possible way.

Walking in feels like stepping into a black and white photo, except the food is in glorious technicolor.

It's not just lunch, it's a Saginaw tradition. This coney spot has been lighting up taste buds for generations. It's not just lunch, it's a Saginaw tradition. This coney spot has been lighting up taste buds for generations.

Their Coney Dogs are a throwback to simpler times, when calories were just a twinkle in a nutritionist’s eye.

The chili is rich, the dogs are snappy, and the atmosphere is pure, unadulterated nostalgia.

11. Bill’s Drive-In (Ypsilanti)

Last but not least, we roll into Ypsilanti for Bill’s Drive-In.

This little yellow shack is like a beacon of hope for the Coney-starved masses.

Bill’s keeps it simple – hot dogs, chili, root beer.

That’s it.
