ST. LEONARD, Md. — Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM) invites the public to explore 9,000 years of local history through its History Walk ‘n’ Talk program. Held on the first Saturday of each month, the free program is made possible with support from the Friends of Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum.

This Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, marks the first History Walk ‘n’ Talk of the year. Participants will have the opportunity to take a scenic stroll through the park while learning about the area’s rich cultural and historical significance.

The day’s activities include two distinct programs:

Life Along the Patuxent: From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., attendees will explore how the Patuxent River shaped the lives of those who lived along its shores. The walk will include visits to a recreated Native American village and a 17th-century tobacco plantation.

“From the Native Americans to the English settlers, people have sculpted the land along the picturesque Patuxent River to fit their needs,” JPPM said in a statement on Facebook.

Dig Into the Story: From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., participants will delve into the methods historians and archaeologists use to uncover and interpret the stories of the past. This walk highlights the diverse historical sites found at JPPM, including Native American settlements, Colonial-era locations, and tenant farming communities.

“Join in an hour-and-a-half strolling conversation on how we know what we know from the past and how we are able to tell their stories,” JPPM said in a statement on Facebook.
