This Picturesque Rural Town In Florida Might Be The State’s Best-Kept Secret

Saddle up, pardners! We’re about to mosey on down to a slice of the Wild West nestled right in the heart of the Sunshine State.

Davie, Florida, is where cowboys meet palm trees, and trust me, it’s a combo that’ll knock your boots off!

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

“Florida? Cowboys? Did someone spike my orange juice?”

But hold onto your ten-gallon hats, folks, because Davie is as real as alligators in the Everglades, and twice as interesting.

Picture this: you’re cruising down Orange Drive, the main drag of this charming town, and suddenly you feel like you’ve been transported to a Hollywood Western set.

But instead of tumbleweeds, you’ve got palm trees swaying in the breeze.

It’s like John Wayne decided to retire and open a tiki bar.

Davie, my friends, is where the Old West meets the New South, with a dash of tropical paradise thrown in for good measure.

It’s a town that doesn’t just march to the beat of its own drum – it line dances to it.

Founded back in 1909, Davie started as an agricultural community.

But unlike most Florida towns that traded their farms for condos faster than you can say “real estate boom,” Davie held onto its rural roots like a cowboy clutching his last can of beans.

Today, this town of about 100,000 residents is a unique blend of suburban comfort and country living.

It’s the kind of place where you might see a horse tied up outside the local Starbucks.

I’m not saying it happens often, but I’m not saying it doesn’t happen either.

One of the first things you’ll notice about Davie is the architecture.

While most of Florida seems to be in a competition for who can build the shiniest, most futuristic-looking building, Davie’s like, “Nah, we’re good with our Old West style, thanks.”

The town hall looks like it could’ve been plucked straight out of Tombstone, Arizona.

It’s got that classic Western facade that makes you half expect to see Wyatt Earp strolling out the front doors.

Instead, you’ll probably just see some guy named Bob picking up a parking permit, but hey, a little imagination goes a long way.

Now, let’s talk about one of Davie’s crown jewels: the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds.

This isn’t just any old rodeo arena, folks.

This is 72,000 square feet of pure, unadulterated cowboy heaven.

The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds hosts events throughout the year, including the Orange Blossom Festival and Rodeo.

Picture this: cowboys and cowgirls showing off their skills, the crowd cheering, the smell of leather and… well, let’s just say it’s not all roses at a rodeo.

But that’s part of the charm!

If you’ve never been to a rodeo before, let me tell you, it’s an experience.

It’s like a ballet, if ballet involved angry bulls and people voluntarily choosing to sit on said angry bulls.

It’s graceful, it’s dangerous, and it’s more exciting than finding an extra chicken nugget in your 10-piece meal.

But Davie isn’t all rodeos and cowboy boots.

Oh no, this town’s got layers, like a really good lasagna.

Or an onion.

But let’s stick with lasagna, because who doesn’t love lasagna?

Take the Old Davie School Historical Museum, for example.

This charming building, constructed in 1918, was Davie’s first permanent school.

Now, it’s a window into the town’s past, showcasing what life was like for early settlers in the area.

Walking through the museum is like stepping into a time machine, minus the risk of accidentally becoming your own grandfather.

You’ll see old photographs, artifacts, and exhibits that tell the story of Davie’s transformation from a swampy wilderness to the unique community it is today.

And let me tell you, those early settlers were made of tough stuff.

They had to contend with mosquitoes the size of small birds, alligators that probably thought humans were just a new type of chewy snack, and humidity that could make you sweat through clothes you weren’t even wearing yet.

But enough about the past, let’s talk about one of Davie’s modern-day attractions: Flamingo Gardens.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

“Flamingos? In a cowboy town? What’s next, rodeo clowns in tutus?”

But trust me, it works.

Flamingo Gardens is a 60-acre tropical paradise that’s part botanical garden, part wildlife sanctuary, and 100% awesome.

It’s like if Mother Nature decided to show off and create her own theme park.

The gardens are home to over 3,000 species of rare and exotic, tropical, subtropical, and native plants.

Walking through here is like taking a trip around the world, minus the jet lag and overpriced airport food.

But the real stars of Flamingo Gardens are the animals.

They’ve got everything from flamingos (obviously) to alligators, bobcats, and even Florida panthers.

It’s like Noah’s Ark, if Noah had decided to retire in Florida and open a really cool zoo.

One of my favorite parts of Flamingo Gardens is the free-flight aviary.

Picture this: you’re walking along, minding your own business, when suddenly a beautiful tropical bird swoops right over your head.

It’s exhilarating!

It’s also slightly terrifying if you’re not a fan of surprise aerial encounters, but hey, that’s nature for you.

Now, all this sightseeing is bound to work up an appetite.

Luckily, Davie’s got you covered with some truly unique dining experiences.

Let’s start with Grifs Western, because nothing says “Welcome to Davie” quite like a restaurant inside a Western wear store.

Yes, you read that right.

Grifs Western is part restaurant, part store, and 100% Davie.

It’s the kind of place where you can grab a delicious burger and then impulse buy a pair of cowboy boots.

Talk about one-stop shopping!

The food at Grifs is classic American fare with a Southern twist.

We’re talking burgers, sandwiches, and salads that’ll make your taste buds do a little happy dance.

And the portions?

Let’s just say you won’t leave hungry unless you’re some kind of superhuman with the appetite of a hummingbird.

But the real charm of Grifs is the atmosphere.

It’s like dining in the middle of a John Wayne movie set, complete with saddles, lassos, and enough cowboy hats to outfit a small army.

It’s kitschy, it’s fun, and it’s pure Davie.

For those looking for something a little more upscale (but still with that Davie charm), there’s Vienna Wine Bar.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

“Wine bar? In cowboy town?”

But remember, Davie is full of surprises.

Vienna Wine Bar is like finding a little piece of Europe right in the heart of Florida.

It’s cozy, it’s romantic, and they have a wine list longer than the line at the DMV (but way more enjoyable).

The food here is as impressive as the wine selection.

We’re talking gourmet European cuisine that’ll make you feel like you’ve been transported to a little café in Vienna.

From schnitzel to strudel, it’s a culinary journey that pairs perfectly with their extensive wine list.

But what really sets Vienna Wine Bar apart is the atmosphere.

It’s intimate, it’s charming, and it’s the perfect spot for a date night or a girls’ night out.

Just maybe leave the cowboy boots at home for this one.

Now, if you’re looking for something a little more… let’s say, reptilian, Davie’s got you covered there too.

Welcome to Everglades Holiday Park, home of the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue team.

This place is like if the Discovery Channel and an amusement park had a baby.

You can take airboat rides through the Everglades, watch alligator wrestling shows (because apparently, that’s a thing), and even hold a baby alligator.

It’s educational, it’s exciting, and it’s only slightly terrifying!

The airboat rides are a must-do experience.

Picture this: you’re zooming across the water, wind in your hair, surrounded by the wild beauty of the Everglades.

It’s like being in a nature documentary, except you’re the star and there’s a good chance you’ll end up with a bad hair day.

And let’s talk about the alligator wrestling shows.

Now, I’m not saying I could do it, but after watching these shows, I feel like I could at least confidently run away from an alligator.

It’s impressive, it’s nerve-wracking, and it’s the kind of thing that’ll make you appreciate your boring, alligator-free day job.

But Davie isn’t just about cowboys and gators.

It’s also home to some serious brain power.

Nova Southeastern University calls Davie home, bringing a touch of academia to this rural paradise.

The campus is beautiful, with modern buildings nestled among lush landscaping.

It’s like someone decided to plop a little slice of Ivy League right in the middle of cowboy country.

Don’t be surprised if you see students walking to class in cowboy boots.

Remember, this is Davie, where Western wear is always in fashion.

For those who prefer their education with a side of nature, there’s Tree Tops Park.

This 243-acre park is like Mother Nature’s playground.

You’ve got trails, you’ve got a lake, you’ve got enough trees to make a squirrel feel like it’s won the lottery.

One of the coolest features of Tree Tops Park is the observation tower.

Climb to the top and you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the park and surrounding area.

It’s like being in a treehouse, except you don’t have to worry about splinters or that weird kid from down the street trying to make it his secret clubhouse.

The park also has equestrian trails, because remember, we’re in Davie.

If you’re not on a horse at least once during your visit, are you even really experiencing Davie?

As we wrap up our tour of this delightful town, I hope you’ve come to appreciate Davie for the unique gem that it is.

It’s a place where the Old West and the New South collide in the most delightful way possible.

From rodeos to wine bars, from airboat rides to university lectures, Davie offers a smorgasbord of experiences that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

It’s a town that embraces its quirks, celebrates its history, and manages to be both charmingly old-fashioned and surprisingly progressive at the same time.

So saddle up, partners!

It’s time to mosey on down to Davie and experience this one-of-a-kind Florida town for yourself.

Just remember to pack your sense of adventure, your appetite, and maybe a pair of cowboy boots.

Trust me, you’re gonna need ’em.
