Mark Anthony Plata, a 31-year-old deputy assigned to the BCSO Detention Bureau, was taken into custody on August 26, 2024. According to a news release from the BCSO, deputies were called to the 12300 block of Claiborne Street on the Southwest Side at approximately 6:27 a.m., where Plata was arrested on charges of assault bodily injury to a family or household member. Sheriff’s Response and Standards

Sheriff Javier Salazar addressed the situation with a strong stance against domestic violence, particularly within law enforcement. “Domestic violence in any setting should never be tolerated, but especially in law enforcement,” Salazar said. “This young man accepted this job knowing we have a high standard, so the consequences of his actions should not come as a surprise to him.” Salazar’s statement underscores the agency’s commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and holding its members accountable for any misconduct.

Ongoing Investigations

The BCSO has initiated separate investigations through its Internal Affairs and Public Integrity units to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. These investigations will assess both the specifics of the assault charges and the appropriateness of Plata’s conduct regarding departmental policies and standards.
