On Thursday, a half-dozen moderate House Democrats backed a Republican resolution criticizing the Biden administration’s management of the Southern border, particularly Vice President Kamala Harris.
Why it is important: The vote occurs as Harris is close to securing the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
Generating the news: The House voted 220-196 to support an act “completely criticizing” the Biden administration and Harris’ “inability to secure the United States border.”
6 Democrats joined Republicans in passing the resolution: Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Don Davis (D-N.C.), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), and Mary Peltola (D-Alaska).
Each of the 6 represents difficult districts, with Golden, Perez, and Peltola (co-chairs of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition) holding seats won by former President Trump in 2020.
What they are stating: In a short conversation in the Capitol, Golden cited legislation he jointly sponsored with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) aiming to restore severe Trump-era border regulations.
“Those are things…that (Harris) might want to be considering implementing as president,” he said Axios, noting that he votes to denounce “the present administration, and that could mean Joe Biden’s administration.”
“Everyone who understands something regarding politics understands that vice presidents have no influence and are hopefully the most unpleasant job in American politics. So I’m not as engaged in how she became a part of it… and more curious.
House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) described the legislation as “pretty silly,” claiming Republicans were “found on their heels” by Biden’s withdrawal and “just wanting to get into politics.” “This fails to move the trend with voters or individuals at home, so people will continue to vote the way they have to vote,” according to him.
