Starbucks Introduces Compostable Cold Cups in Select Locations

Starbucks is taking a significant step towards sustainability by introducing fiber-based compostable cold cups at select locations. Beth Nervig, senior manager of social impact communications at Starbucks, shared that this initiative aligns with local mandates aimed at reducing waste and pollution. Based on local mandates, customers at 24 stores will be served their favorite Starbucks beverage in fiber-based compostable cold cups.

Innovative Environmental Initiative

Several cities, states, and local governments across the U.S. have enacted laws to tackle waste and pollution. One such regulation is the Alameda Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law, passed in the Bay Area in 2018. This law encourages food-based businesses to promote reusable options for their customers. When reusable options are not available, the law permits food vendors to use compostable, fiber-based packaging for to-go items. California, a state actively participating in such environmental initiatives, is among the first to see the rollout of Starbucks’ new compostable cups.

Features and Availability

The new single-use cups are designed specifically for cold beverages. Hot beverage customers will continue to receive the standard paper cups. Starbucks emphasizes its commitment to innovating both single-use and reusable cup options. The compostable cold cups are branded with the standard Starbucks siren logo. Nervig elaborated on the materials used, stating, “The new compostable cups and lids are opaque and made from double-walled, fiber-based paper board with a bioplastic liner, and the lids are made from compostable molded fiber, too.” These environmentally friendly cups will be available at 24 Starbucks locations—21 in California and three in Minnesota. While specific store addresses have not been disclosed, customers in these areas can expect to see the new cups soon.

Encouraging Reusable Options

In addition to the compostable cup initiative, Starbucks continues to promote the use of reusable cups. Earlier this year, the company announced that customers could bring their clean reusable cups to participating stores in the U.S. and Canada. This initiative offers a $0.10 discount on beverages for those who bring personal cups, and Starbucks Rewards members in the U.S. will receive 25 Bonus Stars as an added incentive.

Starbucks is also testing its returnable cup program in Petaluma, California, and Seattle, Washington. Launched in 2022, this program allows customers to deposit their used cold or hot drinking cups in designated return bins. The collected cups are then washed and reused, reducing the overall environmental footprint. Starbucks’ commitment to sustainability is evident through these initiatives, reflecting the company’s mission “to innovate on both single-use and reusable cups.” By offering compostable cold cups and encouraging reusable options, Starbucks aims to reduce waste and promote environmentally friendly practices among its customers.
