Florida: Black’s Island, home to infamous pirates, is up for $50 million

Listed for $50 million, Black’s Island is a 7-acre resort island situated on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It was once the territory of the infamous 18th-century pirate known as the “Robin Hood of Pirates.” The island offers a unique combination of historical significance and luxurious amenities.

Black’s Island features 26 waterfront bungalows, a clubhouse, a cabana, and a pool with sundecks, all connected by a 1,200-foot cedar boardwalk. Potential buyers have the option to maintain it as a commercial resort or transform it into a private family retreat. Accessible only by boat, seaplane, or helicopter, this secluded island provides an unparalleled sense of adventure and exclusivity.

According to Jon Kohler from Jon Kohler & Associates, who co-listed the property, Black’s Island is ideal for adventure seekers and stands out as a one-of-a-kind development in the state of Florida.

The island is named after Black Sam Bellamy, who was considered to be the richest pirate in history. Bellamy resided on the island from 1715 to 1717 before his ship, the Whydah, sank off the coast of Massachusetts. The wreckage of the Whydah was discovered in 1982 and unearthed a collection of valuable treasures including indigo, ivory, gold, and sterling silver. These artifacts are now on display at the Whydah Pirate Museum in Massachusetts.

Atlanta developer Scott Seymour, who bought the island in 2018, restored the bungalows and included amenities. Seymour is willing to sell the entire island or individual bungalows, ranging from $1.5 million to $1.6 million each.

“It was a chance to participate in something that can’t copied,” Seymour mentioned. He is also working on a $20 million hotel on the mainland paying tribute to the island and its pirate namesake.

The durable bungalows, which survived Hurricane Michael in 2018, come fully furnished and equipped. The single-story models are 1,225 square feet with two bedrooms, a loft, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a dining area, a laundry room, and a balcony. The two-story models cover 1,425 square feet and have an extra half bathroom.
