Two murder suspects who escaped from a Mississippi jail have been recaptured after an intensive manhunt, authorities announced on Saturday.
Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were found hiding in an abandoned home in Claiborne County. The pair had escaped from the Claiborne County Detention Center early on Friday morning, according to Sheriff Edward Goods.
Sheriff Goods reported that Collins and Johnson were seen on surveillance footage escaping through the ceiling and making their way outside the jail around 2:20 a.m. During the escape, Johnson injured his right leg and was noted to be walking with a significant limp.
Authorities issued a public alert, warning that both men were considered dangerous. The search ended when they were located in the abandoned home on Saturday.
Both suspects were awaiting trial on murder charges in separate counties. Collins is charged with the October 2023 murder of his cousin in Copiah County. Johnson is facing charges of murder and aggravated assault stemming from an October 2022 incident in Jefferson County. His trial was scheduled to begin on October 15.
With their recapture, both Collins and Johnson now face additional charges for escaping from custody.
