New York City’s annual Pride March, a cornerstone of LGBTQIA+ activism and celebration, will once again paint Manhattan’s streets in vibrant colors this weekend.
Route and Historical Significance
Dating back to 1970, just a year after the historic Stonewall Uprising, the 2024 Pride March commences at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue near Madison Square Park in Manhattan. From there, it proceeds down Fifth Avenue, turns west onto 8th Street, and continues along Christopher Street, passing by the iconic Stonewall National Monument—a symbol of LGBTQIA+ rights and resilience. The march then heads north on 7th Avenue, where it pays tribute to the New York City AIDS Memorial, before culminating at 16th Street.
Events and Festivities
Scheduled to kick off at noon on Sunday, June 30, NYC Pride 2024 marks significant milestones—55 years since the Stonewall Uprising and 40 years since Heritage of Pride took the reins as the march’s official organizers. Alongside the Pride March, Heritage of Pride hosts the PrideFest LGBTQIA+ street fair starting at 11 a.m. in Greenwich Village. Following this, revelers can join the Bliss Days celebration at 2 p.m. at The DL Rooftop & Lounge, ensuring a day filled with community spirit and joyous festivities.
Theme and Grand Marshals
Under the banner of “Reflect. Empower. Unite,” this year’s NYC Pride March amplifies the voices and stories of individuals, community leaders, advocates, and allies united in the pursuit of queer liberation and joy. Executive Director Sandra Pérez emphasized the march’s role in fostering positivity and solidarity, stating, “The March is where we demonstrate the strength that comes with inclusion, diversity, and acceptance.”
The 2024 grand marshals embody this year’s theme through their diverse backgrounds and impactful contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community. Among them are Baddie Brooks, DaShawn Usher, Eshe Ukwell, Michelle Visage, Miss Major, Robin Drake, and Raquel Willis—each recognized for their leadership and advocacy across various facets of queer rights and representation.
As NYC Pride 2024 unfolds, participants and spectators alike are invited to join in celebrating the accomplishments, talents, and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community. Beyond a parade, it serves as a powerful symbol of unity and progress, honoring its historical roots while advocating for a future marked by inclusivity and equality.
