On December 10, 2019, Fort Hall Police and emergency responders were called to Cody’s residence on the Fort Hall Reservation following a report of an unresponsive child. Despite life-saving efforts, the baby boy was declared dead. An autopsy revealed that malnutrition, exacerbated by significant levels of methamphetamine in the infant’s system, was the cause of death.

Cody admitted to using methamphetamine around the child and exposing him to the drug, leading to his malnutrition and subsequent death. She pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child on December 21, 2023.

U.S. Attorney Hurwit expressed the tragic impact of the case, emphasizing the dangers of drug addiction. Special Agent in Charge Shohini Sinha of the Salt Lake City FBI echoed this sentiment, noting the devastating consequences for the community.

Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye ordered Cody’s five-year prison sentence to be followed by three years of supervised release. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, Fort Hall Police Department, and the Bannock and Ada County Coroner’s Offices.
