San Francisco Brewery Rises From the Ashes, Quite Literally

San Francisco’s Local Brewing Company has reintroduced their “Gay Crush” beer, marking a significant milestone over a year after their brewery was devastated by fire. The blaze, which occurred in December 2022, destroyed their historic building on Bluxome Street in SOMA, forcing them to close their doors. “We could have just given up, but my co-founder Sarah Fenson and I felt it wasn’t right to end like this,” said Regan Long, co-owner and brew-master of Local Brewing.

A Legacy of Inclusion

Founded in 2014, Local Brewing quickly became a trailblazer as the first woman-owned and operated brewery in San Francisco. Despite challenges in the male-dominated craft brewery scene, Long and Fenson established a business model centered on inclusion and acceptance. This ethos was exemplified when they created their first Pride-themed brew, “Gay Beach,” in 2017.

Rebuilding and Partnership

Following the fire, Local Brewing had to pivot and rebuild. They partnered with East Brothers Brewing in Richmond, enabling them to resume production within eight months of the incident. This partnership has been crucial, allowing Local Brewing to continue brewing its flagship beers and revive its beloved “Gay Crush” beer. “We are bringing back ‘Gay Crush’ for the first time since the fire,” Long explained. “It’s designed to be lighter-bodied and easy-drinking, perfect for enjoying in places like Dolores Park.”

Pride Month Celebration

Released on June 1st in limited quantities, including 15 kegs and 30 cases, “Gay Crush” is more than just a beer; it symbolizes resilience, community support, and the spirit of Pride. Even in a small batch, reintroducing this beer holds deep meaning for Local Brewing Company. “As a small business, putting ‘Gay Crush’ back out there is incredibly meaningful for us,” Long emphasized.

Looking Ahead

While Local Brewing dreams of one day relaunching their brewery and restaurant, they are mindful of the ongoing challenges faced by small businesses, exacerbated by the pandemic. They plan to take their time in making decisions about the future, ensuring that any expansion aligns with their values and community needs. “We’ll see how things progress from here and hopefully, it will make sense for us to reopen a brick-and-mortar location and welcome our customers back,” said Long optimistically.
