A school district in Long Island has taken significant steps to combat vaping by installing vape detectors that can detect not only nicotine but also THC and aggressive behavior. This initiative, led by Lindenhurst Middle School, was inspired by the advocacy of a concerned teenager.
Vape Detectors Installed at Lindenhurst Middle School
Lindenhurst Middle School has installed two vape detectors in each of its student bathrooms. Developed by Soter Technologies, these devices are designed to detect nicotine, THC, and signs of aggressive behavior, such as bullying or fighting. Derek Peterson of Soter Technologies explained, “The device not only picks up nicotine in the air but also THC and aggressive behavior. Our AI algorithm distinguishes between sounds like door slams or toilet bowl slams and actual roughhousing.”
How Do the Detectors Work?
The detectors function without microphones, ensuring privacy while monitoring air quality and sound anomalies. When a vape or aggressive behavior is detected, an email alert is immediately sent to the school principal. This rapid notification allows for quick intervention. Through a partnership with the organization Babylon Cares, students caught vaping are connected to professional intervention services. Principal Frank Naccarato emphasized the educational aspect of the initiative, stating, “There’s still a consequence, but now we’ve added that education piece. They also have to research the harmful effects of vaping.”
Since the installation of the detectors, two students have been caught and provided with help. The Town of Babylon funded the devices through the “American Rescue Plan,” and there are plans to expand this initiative to Lindenhurst High School and other districts like Copiague and Wyandanch.
A Student’s Determination
The idea to install vape detectors came from 15-year-old Vanessa Probst. After researching the severe side effects of vaping, including conditions like popcorn lung and various cancers, Vanessa became deeply concerned. She noticed the vaping problem among her peers last year and discussed it with classmates at the middle school. “They would tell these stories of how addicted they were and how they would go into the bathroom with their friends to vape,” Vanessa said.
Vanessa’s proactive stance and advocacy have been instrumental in bringing this issue to the forefront. She expressed gratitude that her classmates who may be struggling with addiction can now receive the help they need.
Future Expansion
The success of the vape detectors at Lindenhurst Middle School has set a precedent for other schools in the district. The plan to expand these efforts to Lindenhurst High School and additional districts highlights a growing recognition of the vaping problem and the importance of addressing it proactively. The initiative not only aims to deter vaping but also provides students with the necessary education and support to overcome addiction.
