New mug shots have surfaced of Otter 841, America’s most notorious marine mammal, who has returned to the waters of Santa Cruz, California. Known for her antics last summer, which included biting surfboards and even commandeering them, Otter 841 is back, causing surfers to stay on high alert.
Spotting Otter 841
Authorities undertook an expedition to spot the infamous otter, identified by the number on her tag. Photographer Mark Woodward, who captured viral images of her last year, spotted her again over Memorial Day weekend. “When I saw her, she was feeding, really close to the cliffs,” Woodward shared. His latest photos show Otter 841 appearing more respectful of surfers this time around. “She was being very respectful of the surfers,” he noted. Last year, Otter 841’s escapades drew large crowds, creating dangerous situations as paddleboarders and kayakers ventured too close to the kelp beds where sea otters sleep. “It’s dangerous,” Woodward explained. “It’s also illegal.”
Wildlife Officials’ Efforts
In response to the potential dangers, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife launched several dragnet operations last year to capture Otter 841. However, these attempts were unsuccessful, and the otter eventually vanished. She reappeared in October with a pup, leading experts to speculate that her aggressive behavior may have been due to pregnancy. Despite her notoriety, there is a hope that Otter 841 can live peacefully. “I hope she could be left alone,” Woodward said. “She lives her best life. Hopefully, she will refrain from getting on the boards. But who knows?”
A Delicate Balance
Otter 841’s story highlights the delicate balance between wildlife and human recreation. As she navigates her life in the busy waters of Santa Cruz, her interactions with surfers and beachgoers will continue to be closely watched by both wildlife officials and the public.
For now, surfers and otter enthusiasts alike remain captivated by the return of America’s most wanted marine mammal.
