High school senior Joseph Bommarito Autman did not anticipate the emotional graduation ceremony that awaited him. When he heard his name called, he felt a profound sense of achievement, both in his education and health journey. “I wasn’t even expecting it,” Autman remarked. “They woke me up and said, ‘Put your cap and gown on.'” Autman, who has battled congestive heart failure since birth, faced numerous challenges. This serious condition, where the heart fails to pump blood efficiently, leads to blood returning to the heart faster than it could be expelled.
A Lifetime of Challenges and Resilience
“Congestive heart failure, having only half a heart, caused a lot of difficulties for Joseph,” his mother, Sjana Autman, explained. “Learning was difficult, writing was difficult.” By the time he was 18, Autman had already undergone four heart surgeries before his fourth birthday and entered foster care at six. Despite these hardships, he eventually found a loving family who has stood by him through thick and thin. “When I got on the transplant list, they said it could take years, even decades, to get a new heart,” Autman shared. “It took me just a couple of months, and here I am with a new heart.” His pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Natalie Shwaish, noted that his new heart came from a generous donor, marking a significant turning point in his life.
A Celebration of Hope and Community
In a hospital room filled with masked family members, healthcare heroes, and friends, Autman celebrated his graduation. His teacher handed him his diploma, symbolizing not just academic success but a victory over immense health challenges. “I could not have done this by myself,” Autman humbly stated. “I don’t think anyone could have done this alone. It’s the culmination of many people’s efforts. This has given me a second wind—not just a second chance, but a renewed drive and passion.”
Although Autman will need to stay in the hospital for a few more weeks, he remains optimistic about his future. He plans to attend college, armed with a new heart and an unwavering spirit.
