In a shocking murder-suicide, a man fatally shot his 29-year-old girlfriend before taking his own life in their shared Brooklyn apartment. The tragic event was witnessed by the gunman’s mother, Norma Knight, who shared her harrowing experience with the Daily News. The incident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Monday in a fourth-floor apartment on Avenue I near Ocean Avenue in Midwood, according to police reports.
The Argument and Fatal Outcome
Teddy Knight, 35, and his girlfriend Tanezia Blockwood had been arguing hours before the fatal shooting, as recounted by Norma Knight. “Last night, I was in my bed and I heard them quarreling inside their bedroom,” she said. The tension escalated in the morning when Blockwood was seen packing clothes in a laundry bag, leading to another heated argument. Norma Knight described the horrifying scene: “He pulled her into the bathroom, where they continued fighting. He went out and then came back, started shooting her, and then stomped on her face.”
Police arrived at the apartment to find both Teddy Knight and Tanezia Blockwood with gunshot wounds to their heads. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Norma Knight, visibly shaken, was taken to a local hospital for observation. Inside the apartment during the incident were the couple’s young children—a 2-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl—who were swiftly removed from the scene.
Longstanding Issues
According to Norma Knight, the couple had been facing numerous problems for a long time, including issues related to their children and financial strain. “They have had problems for a long time,” she said. “The children, the rent.” Police sources indicated that the fatal argument was triggered by a custody battle. Neighbors expressed shock and sadness as they recalled their interactions with the family.
Community Shock and Mourning
Neighbors were left in disbelief following the incident. Daniel Desir, a 76-year-old resident of the building, recalled frequent arguments between the couple. “They were always fighting,” he said, noting that Teddy Knight was generally a quiet individual otherwise. Tanezia Blockwood, who had just completed nursing school, was remembered fondly by neighbors. “She was such a beautiful, gentle woman,” Desir remarked. “The children were close with their mother.”
Christopher Andre, another neighbor, mentioned that Knight had recently appeared more stressed than usual. “He just seemed stressed a lot,” said Andre. “I’m sad it happened.” Despite his recent distress, Andre remembered Knight as a generally “cool” guy and noted that Blockwood was always kind and smiling. Another neighbor, who chose to remain anonymous, described Knight as “a sweetheart” who would often help with groceries. “Nice guy,” the neighbor said. “It’s just a shock. Who would expect this from such a gentle person?”
Ongoing Investigation
The police are continuing their investigation into the tragic incident and have not yet officially ruled the deaths a murder-suicide. The community remains in shock, grappling with the loss of two lives and the impact on the young children left behind.
