Former NFL cornerback Cam Sutton has turned himself in to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida following allegations of domestic battery by strangulation. The ex-Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers player surrendered on Sunday evening and was subsequently booked into the Orient Road Jail near Tampa.
Sutton’s surrender comes after weeks of being sought by law enforcement authorities. Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the seriousness of domestic violence, stating, “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County.”
The incident has led to Sutton’s release from the Detroit Lions, who terminated his contract upon learning of the charges. Sutton, who had signed a lucrative three-year, $33 million deal with the Lions in March 2023, had appeared in 17 games for the team during the previous season, accumulating 61 tackles, one interception, and six pass deflections.
Prior to his stint with the Lions, Sutton had spent six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, his professional career now faces significant uncertainty in the wake of these serious allegations.
Domestic violence continues to be a pressing issue, and cases involving high-profile individuals like Sutton highlight the ongoing need for awareness and accountability in combating such behavior.
