In response to the devastating effects of the January storms and flooding in San Diego County, CalFresh recipients are now granted the opportunity to purchase hot and prepared food using their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. Typically restricted to purchasing shelf-stable items, this temporary change aims to alleviate the challenges faced by households impacted by the natural disaster.
Authorized by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this modification extends until April 3, 2024. All CalFresh recipients, as well as new Disaster CalFresh recipients, are eligible to utilize this allowance at any authorized EBT retailer.
The FNS, recognizing the widespread disruptions caused by the storms and flooding, cited conditions such as power outages, home damage, and displacement of residents as grounds for implementing this waiver. By permitting the purchase of hot and prepared food, households experiencing difficulties in procuring and preparing meals can find some relief during this challenging period.
To ensure widespread awareness, the FNS has notified all authorized EBT retailers in San Diego County of the waiver and encourages them to prominently display notices informing customers of this change.
This announcement follows the opening of the Disaster CalFresh application period from March 7 to March 15. This program offers a one-time payment to assist individuals and families affected by the January rainstorm and flooding in purchasing essential food items.
As San Diego County continues its recovery efforts in the aftermath of the severe weather events, initiatives like these provide vital support to those grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
