Forensic genealogists have successfully identified the human remains discovered in an abandoned home in Mississippi as those of Gary Lockhart, a former U.S. Marine who went missing a decade ago.
In March 2023, authorities from the Jackson Police Department uncovered skeletal remains at a residence on Cooper Road. Despite confirming the remains as male, investigators were initially unable to establish further identifying details, leading to the individual being referred to as Hinds County John Doe 2023.
The Jackson Police Department, in collaboration with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, enlisted the expertise of Othram Inc. for advanced DNA testing. Utilizing genome sequencing and forensic genealogy techniques, scientists at Othram were able to construct a genetic profile of the deceased, ultimately tracing him back to his relatives.
Following the collection and analysis of DNA samples from family members, Othram conclusively identified the remains as belonging to Gary Lockhart, born on January 30, 1953. Lockhart, a former Marine who served in Panama and during the Vietnam War, had been reported missing by his daughters a decade ago. Despite their efforts to locate him through private investigators, Lockhart had seemingly vanished without a trace.
While the cause of Lockhart’s death remains undisclosed, the successful identification brings closure to his family after years of uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts.
This development underscores the invaluable role of forensic technology and collaboration in resolving long-standing missing persons cases, offering solace to grieving families seeking answers.
